Shamian Island

Liwan, Guangzhou

4.6(8300 reviews)
ColonialTree-linedCafes

A leafy island of colonial mansions where Guangzhou's treaty-port past is preserved in amber.

Shamian was the foreign concession of old Canton, and the island still looks like a 1900s postcard: neoclassical mansions, banyan-lined avenues, and church spires, all car-free at the core. Locals come to stroll, photograph weddings, and sip coffee under the trees.

Enter from the bridge at the east end, wander the two main avenues, and end at the riverside promenade. It is the gentlest, prettiest hour in Guangzhou.

Best for: Guangzhou's colonial past, preserved on a car-free island.
