Reed Flute Cave
Xiufeng, Guilin
A 240-million-year-old cave of stone forests and grottoes, lit like a cathedral of light.
The Reed Flute Cave is Guilin's underground masterpiece: a 240-million-year-old limestone cavern with stalactite 'crystal palaces' and a stone forest so fine it was a tourist attraction during the Tang dynasty. The current lighting makes it feel like walking through a jewel box.
The cave is 20 minutes from the city center and works in any weather. Allow ninety minutes; the final chamber, with its mirrored pool, is the money shot.
Best for: An underground palace of stone, lit like a cathedral.
