Green Lake Gulls
Wuhua, Kunming
Every winter, 10,000 Siberian gulls winter in Kunming's Green Lake - and the park becomes a feeding frenzy.
Every November, black-headed gulls fly 3,000km from Siberia to spend the winter in Kunming's mild climate - thousands of them, packed onto Green Lake. The park becomes a wall of wings, and the city's morning ritual is buying a bag of gull crackers and feeding the crowd.
The gulls stay until March. Go early, when the light is soft and the birds are hungriest, and watch retirees dance to accordion music on the other side of the lake.
Best for: Siberian gulls, morning tai chi, and the friendliest park in China.
