M50 Art District
Putuo, Shanghai
Fifty independent galleries inside a former textile mill, where Shanghai's contemporary art scene lives.
M50 is a rambling complex of converted textile warehouses along Suzhou Creek, home to over fifty galleries and artist studios. There is no curation, no entrance fee, and no script - you wander stairwells and stumble onto the best young art in China.
Plan half a day. The cafes inside are decent, the art is uneven, and that is exactly the charm.
Best for: A free, unscripted afternoon of contemporary Chinese art.
