Terracotta Warriors Museum
Lintong, Xi'an
Eight thousand life-sized warriors frozen in battle formation - the greatest archaeological site in China.
The Terracotta Warriors need no introduction, but the site rewards preparation. Pit One is the cinematic one; Pits Two and Three hold the cavalry and the command center, plus the famous kneeling archer. An official English guide transforms the visit from photos to story.
Go at opening time or after 15:00 to dodge the tour-bus crush. The site is 40 minutes outside the city, so plan transport before you arrive.
Best for: The one site no China itinerary can skip.
