Yuanyang Rice Terraces
Yuanyang, Yuanyang
The Hani people's 1,300-year staircase to the sky - the most extraordinary terraces on earth.
The Hani terraces of Yuanyang climb a mountainside with 1,300 years of accumulated labor - so vast they are visible from space, so beautiful they are UNESCO-listed. In the right season, the flooded terraces mirror the sky like a million mirrors.
Sunrise at Duoyishu and sunset at Laohuzui are the pilgrim stops. Winter (Nov-Mar) is the mirror season; the morning mist is half the magic.
Best for: A staircase to the sky, mirrored in water.
