The tulou roundhouses of the Zhangzhou hills, set around a lantern-lit canal town.
Yunshuiyao pairs the famous Fujian tulou - giant earthen fortresses of clan life - with a canal town of banyan trees and stone mills. The Heguilou and Huaiyuanlou roundhouses are the stars; the canal walk at dusk is the memory.
It is two hours from Xiamen, which is why it is quieter than the Nanjing clusters. Stay overnight in a converted tulou to watch the lanterns come on.
Best for: Roundhouses and a canal town, lantern-lit at dusk.
