Kuanzhai Alley
Qingyang, Chengdu
Three restored Qing lanes of teahouses, craft shops, and courtyard bars - Chengdu's most charming shopping street.
Kuanzhai ('wide-narrow') Alley is a trio of Qing dynasty lanes restored to their brick-and-tile glory: silk shops, sugar-painting artists, face-painting stalls, and teahouses where the afternoon dissolves.
It is touristy, but done beautifully. Buy a hand-painted sugar dragon, get your portrait done in ink, and end with a foot massage at one of the courtyard spas. The lanes are at their best after the sun sets.
Best for: Chengdu's most charming souvenir hunting, in Qing-era lanes.
