The tomb of the Ming dynasty's founder, guarded by a spirit path of stone elephants and camels.

Ming Xiaoling is the mausoleum of Zhu Yuanzhang, the peasant who founded the Ming dynasty, and its setting is cinematic: a stone spirit path lined with giant carved animals and officials, leading through forests to the great red wall of the tomb mound.

The walk through the forest is half the experience - the path is nearly a kilometer of statues, moss, and green light. Combine it with Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on the same mountain for a full day.

Best for: The Ming dynasty's grandest tomb, with a stone zoo on the way.
