The 'Little Potala' - a golden-roofed monastery complex on a hill above Shangri-La.
Songzanlin is the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan, its white buildings and golden roofs climbing a hillside like a small Potala. Monks in crimson robes move between halls, and the morning chant fills the courtyards with low, ancient sound.
Go early for the light and the incense. The climb to the main hall is steep but rewarded by the view over the valley. Dress modestly and quietly.
Best for: Yunnan's Little Potala, golden in the morning light.
