Tiger Leaping Gorge
Shangri-La, Shangri-La
One of the world's great treks: two days along a gorge where the Jinsha River fights its way through the mountains.
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a 15-kilometer canyon where the Yangtze's upper river squeezes between 4,000-meter walls. The high-trail trek - guesthouses, tea terraces, and views that stop you mid-stride - is one of the great budget adventures of Asia.
Two days, one night in a guesthouse on the trail, and a crossing of the famous tiger-leap rocks. Best between October and April, when the gorge is dry and the light is clear.
Best for: Two days on one of Asia's great trails.
