Nanputuo Temple
Siming, Xiamen
A thousand-year temple at the foot of Wulao Peak, with the sea behind and incense always rising.
Nanputuo is Xiamen's spiritual anchor: a sprawling Buddhist temple against the green Wulao Peak, five minutes from Xiamen University and ten from the sea. The halls climb the hillside, and the view from the top terrace takes in the whole bay.
Entry is free, the vegetarian meals at noon are famous, and the sea-view pagoda at the summit is the payoff. Come in the morning when the incense is thick and the tourists thin.
Best for: A thousand-year temple, free, with a sea view.
