Xi'an's city wall is the most complete ancient wall in China - wide enough for a road, ringed by gates and watchtowers - and a sunset bike ride along its top is the city's best experience. Bikes and tandems rent right on the wall.

Allow two leisurely hours with stops. The west side is quietest; the south gate is the most photogenic at dusk.

Best for: Fourteen kilometers of ancient wall and skyline at golden hour.
